According to the latest statistics YouTube is now the second largest search engine after Google. It seems that people are now searching for video based information as well as for text.
Traditionally the typical Affiliate Product Review has been based on a mini-site or a review blog; and has consisted of a written review, perhaps with a picture of the product and, on the more sophisticated sites you may also see a star rating. Blogs, and particularly Wordpress, are my preferred choice because of the availability of specialist plugins.
Recently, I've been experimenting with Video Product Reviews, predominantly on YouTube, but also on a number of the other popular video hosting sites. There are two real advantages to be gained by creating video reviews..
- The potential exposure to the rapidly growing YouTube audience
- The benefit of your Video Product Review being ranked highly in Google and other search engines.
The best results can be obtained by registering a new channel on YouTube for each product that you plan to review. You should also use your primary keyword (Including, where appropriate, the product name) as the channel name. This will contribute significantly to your ranking, particularly in Google.
Having a unique channel per product review also gives you the opportunity to place a link back to your own site in the channel description as well as in the video description. And, because YouTube position your latest video in the channel page, your video review will get additional exposure.
My best results have been achieved by linking from the video sites to dedicated landing pages. My preferred option is to use squeeze pages to capture name and email and to presell the offer. Subscribers are redirected to the merchants site after they have opted-in.
I have also tested landing pages with the dynamic unblockable pop-up with an opt-in form. The squeeze page outperforms the pop-in in most circumstances.
Capturing the name and email allows me to send a series of promotional emails containing my affiliate link delivered by autoresponder. This technique results in an increase in affiliate sales.
