I'll Take You By The Hand and I'll Show You The Exact Results of All the Internet Marketing Strategies and Tactics That I Personally Test and Use Every Single Month...

Getting A New Site Indexed

Getting a brand new site established takes a lot of hard work and it doesn't stop with loading your site with content. There's no point setting up a website unless you can attract traffic. Of course you can pay for traffic using pay per click marketing. However, for long term success you need organic traffic; and that is achieved by grabbing a good ranking in the search engines.

The first step in search engine marketing is making sure that they search engines discover your site exists and they index all your pages. Getting indexed is usually the result of the search engine spiders finding, and following, a link to your site. To make sure that happens quickly, you need to get that link on a site that is spidered frequently and at short, regular intervals.

I've tested several authority sites and I've managed to get new sites indexed within just a couple of hours. In my opinion you shouldn't rely on just one method. Your immediate priority should be to get a few incoming links from a range of sites known to be frequently spidered by the search engines.

For example: Bookmarking sites such as Digg, Delicious, JumpTags, Mister Wong, Propeller, Reddit and Stumbleupon and very popular sites and their most recent content often appears in the search engine results pages.

One of my more recent tests involved a comparison between a small HTML based content site and a WordPress blog. To be honest I wasn't really surprised to discover that the blog performed better in the search engines. What did surprise me was the speed at which the blog was indexed by Google.

The key difference was the fact that I submitted my blog's feed to a number of RSS Directories using RSSbot a simple desktop application that semi-automates the process of submitting feeds to a range of directories. It's a great little tool and well worth the small investment.

Speaking of great little tools, I'd also recommend that you invest in SocialBot which speeds up the social bookmarking process, saving you time to focus on the more important tasks.

Finally..

Obviously I strongly recommend that you base your new sites on the WordPress blog platform. However, if you prefer to use HTML, then I suggest you use an HTML to RSS converter such as HTML2RSS or Ice Rocket and when you've created your RSS feed be sure to "ping" it with Pingoat and Ping-O-Matic.

Eye Tracking Tests

One of my "secret" weapons is a website I found way back in August 2006. It's a site that offers incredibly affordable and sophisticated tracking. Crazy Egg offers a basic account at just $9.00 a month all the way up to a Pro account at $99.00 per month.

Being able to track everything that a visitor does on your site means that you can analyse is depth which items are attracting attention and which things are slowing progress through your site.

The key to any website is that it's designed to encourage the visitor to take the actions that you want them to.

The Crazy Egg tracking system enables you to accurately measure the effectiveness of your site's layout, navigation and calls to action.

My most recent tests involved the analysis of visitor behaviour on a couple of niche based blogs. I wanted to determine how to best utilise the high value real estate in the top right hand corner hot spot. You may be surprised at the results.....{+}

Competitive Split Testing

Many people think that Split Testing is about increasing the sales conversion rate of your sales process.

I guess we all know how we can set up a split test of two or more pages to determine which one achieves the highest sales conversion rate.

When running any split test it's important that the results are "statiscally significant" based on the number of actions taken: Number of sales, optins, downloads, etc.

Assuming that you have X actions from your control copy, and Y actions from your test copy (where X is the better performing one).

If the difference in the number of actions (X – Y) is greater than the square root of the total number of actions (X + Y), then the difference is statistically significant.

It's generally thought that significance is achieved after 40 actions. But the above formula should be applied to be absolutely sure.

Check out "small changes : Big Profits" - it's probably the most comprehensive book available on the topic of testing and tracking.

Let's look at using split testing for competitive purposes..

First of all, have you considered evaluating a range of similar products as an affiliate?

If you want to discover which is the most profitable product to promote as an affiliate, simply set up your split test script to rotate all the competitive products, check your traffic stats with your sales and you'll see which product generates the highest revenue. As I'm sure you'll discover, the product with the highest commission isn't always the winner!

Secondly, here's one of my "secret" split testing strategies that I've never revealed before.....{+}

Quick and Easy Niche Finding

I read something the other day that struck a chord with me..

If it's selling offline then it'll almost certainly sell online

Clearly that doesn't apply to window cleaning, although I sometimes think that Microsoft could do with a good Windows cleaner. ;-)

Anyway, here are a couple of quick and easy ways to spot a hot topic..

  1. Check out Zinio and browse through the categories of magazines. Magazines are expensive to publish and the presence of a magazine in a niche market is a good indication that there is a demand for information and, just as importantly, people are already paying to advertise products and services to that market. When you discover a niche that interests you, be sure to look at the magazines to see what types of things are being advertised.
  2. Go to your Amazon site of choice and skim through the top level categories to identify a general topic that interests you.  Then keep digging down into the sub categories. Be sure to sort your search results by "Best seller". If it's a best seller on Amazon, you can be sure that there's a market for the topic online. It's important to search your local Amazon if you're targeting a geographic region, there's no point in looking for the best selling products on the US site if your market is Spain.

There's some incredibly valuable data available to you on Amazon that lot's of people miss.....{+}

Beating Your Competitor’s Clickbank Gravity Ranking

To be able to gain a higher gravity score than your competitor in the Clickbank marketplace, you need to fully understand how Clickbank Gravity is calculated.

When an affiliate makes their first sale of a product, CB add 1.00 to the gravity for that product. However, if that affiliate doesn't make another sale, their gravity score is reduced by approximately 4% for every day that that affiliate fails to aake a sale. If the affiliate fails to make a second sale during the following 8 weeks, that affiliate’s sales are dropped from the gravity calculation for that product.

So, it's not just about recruiting affiliates to build gravity, it's also about maintaining gravity by encouraging those affiliates to make repeat sales.

Breaking the objective into two areas..

1. Recruiting affiliates.

The obvious starting point is to track down the people who are selling your competitors products and make them a better offer.

When someone has already gone to the trouble of setting up a review blog, an autoresponder sequence, articles and other promotional materials then it will take a lot to persuade them to shift from an established product toa new product.

The vast majority of affiliates are looking for an easy life and, therefore, the more you do for them the more likely they are to accept your offer.

It's vital that you make it easy for them to become your affiliate. You must offer them a wide range of promotional materials including articles, blog posts, press releases, banners, PPC ad copy, product reviews, autoresponder sequences, solo emails, forum signatures, free viral reports, etc.

You really need to focus on "selling" the affiliate opportunity. Offer to create a unique promotional piece just for them. Offer them the highest commission rate, ask them what it would take from you to pwrsuade them to promote your product.

You should also look to recruiting new affiliates. Look in the CB marketpace for complimentary products. Look in other affiliate networks such as CJ, PayDotCom for competing and complimentary products. Research the CPA networks to see if there are any offers that could be associated with your product.

Seek out the JV brokers such as JV Alert, JV Notify Pro, etc. and see if their members have suitable lists.

Seek out ezine and newsletter publishers within the niche market and see if they would be interested in promoting your product as an affiliate.

Browse sites such as Blogger, WordPress, Squidoo, HubPages, Google Knols, etc. and look for content that is related to your product. Contact the writers to see if they are interested in becoming your affiliate.

Search for forums within your niche and look for members with affiliate links in the forum signatures.

Visit all the Internet marketing forums where your potential affiliates hang out and, where appropriate, post in their affiliate marketing and joint venture sections.

2. Motivating affiliates.

While getting that first sale from each of your affiliates is critically important, it is meaningless if they don't make regular repeat sales to main tain their contribution to your product's gravity score.

The most important thing you should do is to get all of your affiliates to sign up to your affiliates list. This list must NOT be used to sell to your affiliates. You should main tain contact with your affiliates, keep them up to date with the latest news, offers and developments.

Be sure to regularly make new promotional materials available to them.

Offer special incentives such as a prize for the maximum number of sales within a specified period of time.

If you have sufficient sales volume, publish a league table of affiliate sales and encourage your affiliates to compete for top position.

Your affiliates are affectively your sales team. Treat them as professionals, keep in regular touch and provide them with the best resources you can to make their job easier.

List Building Power Methods

The more subscribers you have on your list, the more you are likely to earn a good income from that list. That's why it's important to invest time and money into building a targeted list, or lists.

Here are a couple of the methods that I use to build my own lists..

The Article Marketing Power Method

Create a three part article. Part one should be distributed to as many article directories as possible and, where permitted, have "Part One" in the title.

Your "Part One" article should then link to "Part Two" which you publish on your own website or blog. At the bottom of "Part Two" you should position an optin form that must be completed before the reader can continue to "Part Three".

Be sure to keep the best information back for "Part Three" but give them enough information in parts one and two to encourage them to click through to the next part.

The Pay Per Click Power Method

This takes a little bit of time to set up, but it's well worth the investment in both time and money when it's implemented properly.

Choose highly targeted long tail keyword phrases for your PPC adverts and be sure to set your maximum cost per click and campaign budgets so that you limit your expenditure (You don't want to bankrupt yourself within the first couple of days). Your PPC ads should offer a free white paper, or special report, and should "sell" the click to your landing page.

Invest in an attractive and appealing landing page that draws the reader in with a strong headline and a clear call to action. Be sure to emphasise the benefits of subscribing and stress the real value of the white paper or special report that you are offering in exchange for their name and email address.

Remember, first impressions are important and your white paper, or special report, should be well presented and of high quality.. especially the content. There are lots of good PLR materials available on which you can base your white paper or free report and, if you use PLR, be sure to add your stamp to it so that it reflects your personality and demonstrates your professionalism and expertise.

Obviously, your PPC advert drives targeted traffic to your landing page and, when the visitor has confirmed their email, they will be redirected to a page with the link to download their free white paper or special report. However, This offers you with a great opportunity to.....{+}

Podcasting For Links and Traffic

How would you like to convert each of your blog posts into a podcast?

Odiogo offers a free, ad supported, service that reads the text of your RSS feed from your blog and converts each blog post into an audio file suitable for podcasting. This service not only gives your blog a voice, it also allows your blog posts to be made available as iPod ready audio files. The more channels you can utilise to distribute your content, the better.

The Odiogo service is easy to install and, once you are up and running, you can submit your podcast to a number of  specialist podcast directories. I've been impressed by the approach used by the Pod Submitter service which will distribute your podcast to 55 directories free of charge.. but with a degree of reciprocation. Check it out and you'll see their intelligent approach to viral marketing!

One of the primary benefits of creating and distributing a keyword based podcasts is the boost in link popularity that you can gain. However, an often overlooked benefit is that very few of your competitors will be creating and distributing podcasts and your links will probably rank quite highly for your keyword phrases. And, of course, you will gain traffic and "listeners" who search for relevant content to play on their iPods.

As well as converting your blog posts, you can also record your own podcasts using the free Audacity audio recording application. If you're short of ideas, you can create a recording based on your own articles or articles to which you have private label rights. Again you can use Pod Submitter to distribute your podcast to their list of directories.

The Power Of The Free Report

I've recently seen a number of people suggest that giving away free reports is no longer worth the time and effort.

I have to disagree!

There are many ways that you can benefit from the publishing and distribution of free reports:

  • Building your brand
  • Establishing your credibility as an expert
  • Building your lists
  • Traffic from links within the report
  • Income from embedded affiliate links
  • Increase in link popularity
  • Potential boost in your page rank

Creatingt a free report doesn't have to be either time consuming or expensive. Although the better the quality of your report, the more likely that it will be downloaded.

One of the most effective methods of creating a free report is to base it upon material with private label rights. Simply edit the source document, add your name and, if possible, improve the presentation of the report with a professional looking template.

It's also worth noting that once a book has been created and distributed, your work is done. It's a 'set it and forget it' type of operation. Your free reports will be out there, providing backlinks and generating traffic.

Here's a list of 24 sites where you can submit your free reports:

One place that deserves special mention is:

Scribd.com which is becoming increasingly popular and has proven to be a great source of targeted traffic.

Of course there are ways of boosting the exposure of your free reports.....{+}

Choosing The Right Theme For WordPress

I have a number of niche based blogs and I've been testing a number of different layouts. The aim of my testing was to achieve an increase in Adsense revenue. As I'm sure you already know, the position and format of an Adsense advert can have a significant impact on it's effectiveness.

For the purposes of my testing I used a 336x280 Large Rectangle text advert with white background and no border.

It was not a precise test. I ran the site with a "Basic" theme for two weeks and then changed to a premium "News" type theme for the following two weeks. All traffic was from organic sources, none of the traffic was from paid sources.

Analysis of traffic sources:

  • Search Engines - 70.59%
  • Direct Traffic - 13.68%
  • Referring Sites - 15.73%

When changing from the Basic theme to the premium News theme there was a decrease in Adsense earnings which may not come as much of a surprise. What may surprise you in the degree of difference.....{+}
